They're loading the muskets on the East bench of Salt Lake City. Regiments have formed. Marches may be forthcoming. If politics is local, the 'Hat Rack household is in the epicenter of what will be a 3-month battle.
The issue?
Individual homeowner property rights vs. A Motion to Declare Our Neighborhood a Local Historic District.
As background, on March 10 the Salt Lake City Council passed a 6-month "temporary ordinance" aka "moratorium" that denies demolition permits in my neighborhood. The reason was to prevent a "race to the counter" to file demolition permits while the Council debates creation of his local historic district.
e appraised/resale value of our homes. We at the 'Hat Rack's feel like it's generally good to preserve our home's resale. Wouldn't you?
There is another "anti-ordinance" rebellion-planning meeting scheduled for next Tuesday night. Then, on Wednesday, they storm the Yalecrest Community Council meeting to take prisoners - all in the name of influencing Remington-Love and Martin and their Council colleagues to leave us alone.
If level heads prevail, Remington-Love will recommend to the Landmarks/Planning commissions to subdivide Yalecrest and let some streets and neighborhoods have their plaques. The rest of us will fret the possibility of monster teardowns - as we plot our own teardowns and the collective urge to have 7,000 square feet of space for a family of four (ok, six, it's Utah).
See pics of our battleground neighborhood, and some of the perils and pleasures of teardowns in Yalecrest here.
Meantime, here's a map of the affected area.
